A Typical Day at The Q
for a Middle Schooler

School days begin at 8:30am and end at 3:00pm.
Welcome and Individual Work
In the morning students are welcomed into their classroom. They put away their items into their personalized cubby or organization space and then begin working on their morning tasks. Their morning tasks are assigned on the board or verbally with the teacher.
Morning Meetings
Then students gather for morning meeting where they discuss the schedule of their day, happenings in their classroom or a question that the teachers have posed to them.
Morning Work Studios
After morning meeting the morning studios begin. Each day has a special set of Work Studios that allow children to investigate ideas and learn new concepts and procedures for their learning. The Work Studios are made up of on-going explorations in the core strands of learning including The Arts, Sciences, Mathematics,Social Studies, Language Arts, Language (Mandarin or Spanish).
Lunch and Recess
Students have lunch each day in a relaxed atmosphere in their classrooms. Students can sign up for a hot lunch through the school or can bring their lunch.
We are big believers in going outside-so we ask all students to bring what they need to stay comfortable in different weather. Children go outside to "Rainbow" park or "Skillman" park each day.
Afternoon Work Studios
Students continue their explorations in afternoon Work Studios. All studios include time working independently, in small groups and in large group contexts.

Afternoon Meetings and Dismissal
Students gather at the end of the day to review the day and any reminders for the next day. Students are dismissed on a positive note that allows them to look forward to the next day.

A Strong Sense of Community
There is a strong community built between the different grades and classes. This means that in addition to their own classes, students may also be invited to final presentations of other classes. In addition there are community projects that support our work together that include community service projects or celebrations or inspirations that come from children, teachers and parents.
Helping students connect to meaning and work
We work hard to help students find their own meaning and ways to connect to the content they are being presented. We provide students with a supportive environment where mastering a particular skill or content area, takes an individualized approach where students are given new ways to practice the skills and ideas that they are working with in order to have a relationship to it. All children are excited by different parts of learning whether it be a certain skill they are dedicated to refining or a certain topic that they are interested in discussing. We get to know each child to help them see the value in the work they are doing and to develop their own questions about the world.
Home Learning
Homework in our community is called home learning. In the younger grades from kindergarten to fourth grade home learning is given out twice per week and allows students a chance to share with you what they're working on in class. In the older grades the 5th to 8th grade students are given multiple assignments and are given the chance to develop executive functioning skills so that they can build the muscle of organization and planning assignments within a supportive environment.
