Third & Fourth Grade Strands (click here)

Every grade has their own subjects that weave together to create a unique and meaningful year of learning.

Number Strand: Students strengthen their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills by focusing on basic number fundamentals, progressing to multi-digit operations, fractions, decimals, and negatives, and engaging in real-world applications and collaborative projects.

Reader’s Workshop: Students develop reading fluency and a love for literature, exploring various genres, enhancing comprehension through close reading and library visits, and deepening their engagement with written word through cultural literature investigations and book clubs.

Writer’s Workshop: Students improve their writing by focusing on detail, structure, and grammar, participating in revision and publishing their work in the “I Am An Author” series, while developing detailed, expressive writing in various styles, including realistic fiction, research papers, and poetry.

Science: Students celebrate diverse scientists, conduct experiments on energy, engage in nature observations and field trips to the Queens Zoo, and learn to be anthropologists and naturalists through investigations and creating a Naturalist Field Guide.

Social Studies: Students explore the cultures and traditions such as the Woodland tribes and study immigration through stories, arts, and field trips, culminating in a theatrical retelling of the folktales studied, and investigate the Eastern cultures of Korea, China, Japan, and Indonesia through folk tales, food, music, and research projects. The 3rd and 4th grade social studies curriculum toggle every two years between the study of Mesoamerican cultures and Eastern traditions so that students who advance from 3rd into 4th do not repeat the same unit twice in a row.

The Arts:

  • 2D and 3D Art: Students explore materials and abstract art, working on a group wall hanging and following art history from cave paintings to contemporary art, with projects including cave drawings, Grecian urns, and medieval fantastical beasts.

  • Theater Arts: Students develop collaboration, communication, and empathy through theatrical games and learn set and costume design.

Language: Students learn Spanish or Mandarin with an emphasis on oral fluency through songs, discussions, and real-world activities.

Kids PlayLab: Students practice focus and awareness through exercise, dance, meditation, writing, and drawing, connecting fun with physical and emotional balance, and tracking their progress in self-reflection journals.

Home LearningHome learning activities extend classroom work, offering opportunities to practice planning and reinforcing habits of learning through preparatory or responsive tasks.
