Kindergarten's Partnership with the 45th Street Community Garden Project

Updated: Nov 21

Our Kindergarten students meet weekly, rain or shine, with volunteers from the 45th Street Garden Project to observe and document the changes we see in the garden from September to June.

This fall, students spotted ladybugs, milkweed beetles, and bumblebees. They also got to harvest a number of plants, including purple green beans, cucamelons (or ‘mouse melons’), arugula, and tomatoes. Students planted their own radishes as well and have been carefully documenting their growth and tending to them during each visit. Recently, after observing their radishes, students made a “potion” for the soil with compost and dirt. They eagerly spread it across the raised bed to make sure the soil had enough nutrients by spring. The Kindergarteners were very enthusiastic about digging and mixing the compost together! Our students always look forward to their visits to the garden.
